The Scientific Department of the Institute of Political History focuses its activity mainly on the history of Hungary in the 19th and the 20th century and the history of left movements. Activities are centralized around the specialties of the research fellows of the Institute, with the participation of outside researchers and younger scholars in some cases.

The Head of the Scientific Department is Zoltán Ripp.
